Tuition Setting Policy

During the 2006-2007 academic year, the Student Government of The University of Arizona College of Medicine expressed concern over the predictability of tuition over the four years of medical school.  The leaders of Student Government worked with the College of Medicine administration to develop a plan to govern future tuition increases.  This plan uses data from the Association of American Medical Colleges to set tuition and fees for each entering class at an amount projected to be at the thirty-third percentile of tuition and fees for public medical schools across the United States.  In subsequent years, the tuition for each class in increased by a 3-year rolling average of recent annual increases in the Higher Education Price index (an index of costs to universities).  The rate of increase in the Higher Education Price Index tends to be more stable and lower than the rate of increase of medical school tuitions nationally.  Therefore medical student tuition and fees at The University of Arizona should remain in the lower third of tuition and fees for public medical schools.

The tuition for the 2007-2008 academic year and the projected rates for tuition and fees for subsequent years are presented in the following table:

Please note that the projected tuition and fees for future years cannot be guaranteed.  The Arizona Board of Regents sets tuition and fees for all Arizona universities.  The University of Arizona College of Medicine makes recommendations for medical student tuition to the University and ultimately to the Arizona Board of Regents and will make every effort to maintain tuition and fees at the levels projected above; however the Arizona Board of Regents makes the final determination regarding fees and tuition for all Universities under its jurisdiction. To date, tuition calculated by the methods described above has been accepted by the Arizona Board of Regents.
