Guidelines for
Faculty Sponsors of non-LCME Visiting Medical Students

Students from non-LCME accredited medical schools may participate in no-credit, no-grade, no-hands on educational activities when a University of Arizona College of Medicine faculty member agrees to serve as the visiting student's educational sponsor.

If the educational experience is to be conducted at the University Medical Center (Tucson, Arizona) or a University Physicians, Inc. affiliated clinic, College of Medicine faculty who agree to serve as sponsors must adhere to the following requirements.  Experiences conducted at other clinical sites are at the discretion of the sponsoring faculty member in consultation with administrative leadership of the clinical site.

  1. Students apply directly to the College of Medicine faculty member who will serve as the student's educational sponsor.
  2. All negotiations and plans will be conducted between the sponsoring faculty member and the visiting student.  The terms of the agreement to participate will be made solely by the visiting students and the sponsoring faculty member.
  3. The sponsoring faculty member retains full responsibility to ensure all required  documentation is received prior to the start of the educational activity.

    a.    Proof of professional medical liability with coverage amounts NO LESS THAN $1,000,000/per claim and $3,000,000/aggregate. A copy of the certificate indicating amounts  or a letter of proof from the student's school indicating amounts should be submitted.
    b.    Proof of immunization (since 1980) against measles and rubella , a recent TB test (within 6 months of proposed start date), and documentation of Hepatitis B vaccination or a signed declination form.
    c.    Proof of personal health insurance coverage. A photocopy of student's insurance identification card should be submitted.
    d.    Proof of training in human blood and body fluid precautions per OSHA regulations.
  4. The agreement between the sponsoring faculty member and the visiting medical student is not binding on any other faculty member, resident or student.
  5. The sponsoring faculty member bears individual responsibility for any claims that arise out of failure to comply with these requirements.
